About Us
How Border Icons in Sport Was Born
In December 2018, a group of retired provincial and national sportsmen and women from the Border and East London regions reunited with a shared sense of duty. Witnessing the collapse of community and school sport in the very neighborhoods that once raised them, they felt compelled to act. Sport had transformed their lives — providing purpose, opening doors, and instilling pride — and they knew it could do the same for future generations.
From this conviction, Border Icons in Sport was born. We are a collective of elders, activists, and mentors who aim to:
- Resuscitate community and school sport as a force for development
- Record and preserve our rich sporting history
- Celebrate and honour our forgotten legends
We don’t replace formal structures — we empower them. By offering mentorship, sharing decades of experience, and supporting community-led initiatives, we strive to rebuild dignity and opportunity. In a time of deep socio-economic struggle, we believe sport still has the power to lift hearts, build leaders, and unite generations. This is our mission. This is our legacy.

“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.”
