Honouring the Spirit of Sport

In South Africa’s history, countless sports legends were forged not under stadium lights — but under oppression, struggle, and the unwavering commitment to community. Many of these icons remain undocumented, their achievements confined to memory and faded newspaper clippings. Border Icons in Sport (BIS) was founded to change that.

Through our Honouring Our Legends program, BIS hosts annual gala events to recognise athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators who helped shape the sporting soul of the Eastern Cape. These aren't just formalities — they're acts of justice, of giving forgotten heroes the place they always deserved in our collective memory.

In 2024, BIS deepened its mission with the launch of the Sports History Writing Project. Spearheaded by Garth van Heerden and supported by dedicated volunteers, this initiative collects and publishes stories of past greats — stories that would otherwise be lost. Facebook became a living archive, sparking conversations and remembrance far beyond the initial posts.

“Each tribute we write is a baton handed to the next generation,” said van Heerden. “Our youth need to know that they stand on the shoulders of giants.”

With the support of media partners like GO! Express and local community groups, BIS has created a momentum of pride and storytelling. A digital platform is currently underway, with the goal of making this growing archive accessible to schools, families, and researchers across the country.

Honouring our legends isn't just about looking back — it's about building forward. It's about anchoring the future of sport in a legacy of resilience, excellence, and community. At BIS, we believe these stories matter — and we’re committed to telling them.
