A New Generation Rises: Sport Returns to the Townships

From dusty fields in Buffalo Flats to echoing assembly halls in Duncan Village, a movement is taking root. It’s powered by jerseys, boots, and belief — and its name is Border Icons in Sport.

In June 2023, BIS launched a bold campaign to revive rugby in nine local schools, equipping both primary and high schools with full sets of kits. The handover was more than symbolic — it was a loud statement: school sport is coming back.

But that wasn’t the only spark. In April and May 2024, BIS and Total Risk Administrators rolled out the inaugural TRA-BIS U13 Football Tournament. What started as a six-week local competition became a launchpad for dreams. Aluve Ntwana, a 13-year-old from New Generation Primary School, was selected to train with Napoli FC in Italy — a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The tournament reached 20 schools, distributed gear to underserved players, and saw scouts and coaches select 30 standout talents. And it’s just the beginning: similar tournaments are planned for rugby and water polo in Qonce and Mdantsane, driven by BIS’s belief that sport can solve more than just inactivity.

“Every boot we donate, every jersey we hand over — it’s about restoring dignity,” said BIS official Alan Fritz. “We’re not just building players. We’re rebuilding communities.”
